First Straight Razor Shave

First Straight Razor Shave

Article by Lane Taylor

Learning how to shave with a straight razor is a huge accomplishment. I’m not going to lie to you and say it isn’t difficult. However it’s not terribly difficult either. While some individuals consider it to be an “art,” this is exactly the same shaving technique employed by our great grandfathers and possibly our grandfathers. If they could do it right, you can too.

Mind you, you mustn’t decide to jump in head first. Just like all good and rewarding things in life, learning traditional wet shaving needs time and patience to learn it right and avoid blunders. Naturally, you just didn’t run before you walked, and before you walked, you needed to learn to stand. It is the same thing with a cut throat razor. You cannot just jump right in similar to a modern cartridge based razor, nor is it as simple as a DE razor. Of course that’s the reason why cut throat razor shaving has become extinct as a regular method of shaving.

Below are great tips to help you get started.

You Have to Practice to Get Great

I know you have been told this time and again throughout all of your life, but it’s correct. With out practice, we are simply stumbling around doing things haphazardly. Though a straight razor is much more sophisticated than a knife, in the greater scheme of things, shaving your face with a straight razor is but one small step from shaving using a knife. Do not believe me, check out this video clip.

So, unless you want to regret ever trying to use a vintage straight razor, You should observe my recommendations.

Familiarize yourself with Your Razor

Feel how it balances in your hand. Attempt a variety of grips with it. Slice the air, wave it about (securely), or perhaps shave your arms or legs. Whatever you decide to do, just become accustomed to how it reacts. 90% of straight razor shaving is manipulating the angle. If you can’t control the razor, you simply won’t get a better shave.

The best way I’ve found to learn the correct angle & holding technique was to shave the back of my hand. Executing that once every day for several days taught me the way the razor worked, what angle was necessary to achieve a cutting action, and even more importantly it familiarized me with the razor. One other good method is to practice the razor strokes in the air. Yet, another technique suggested to barber school students is to shave a balloon or tomato. If you work with a balloon, you might want to contemplate lathering with only water as it might explode.

Now, it’s a good idea to shave with both your hands. However it is not essential. But if you can get better at the non-dominant hand, you will find it to be vastly superior, letting you shave tough spots easier.

Each razor possesses its own balance point. It is affected by things such as blade girth, scale material, handle shape, blade shape, hollowness, etcetera. Keep on attempting different holds on the razor to determine the the one which works best for you. Don’t forget, it’s your razor, not mine. You can shave with it however you want. Or, you can use a cleaver similar to the chap above. I will note at this stage that you will want a separate grasp for shaving against the grain. So learn at least two grips for the razor.

How To Shave Your Face The Right Way

How To Shave Your Face The Right Way

Article by Adam

Every since I could remember, men and sometimes women have had to shave their faces. Most men will have to shave at some point in their life and I want to show you the right way to go about doing this. If you think that your razor is what determines how good your shaving turns out then think again, it actually all comes down to your technique.

If you don’t have to shave every single day, then I highly recommend that you don’t. The reason you should not shave every single day is because the more you shave, the coarser your hair will be. If you just leave your hair alone for a day or so, then it will feel much better and it will be easier to shave. What you need to understand is that your hair will get softer as it grows and because of this you will be able to cut it a lot easier, which means you won’t go through as many razors.

Now, the way to shave your face is pretty simple, the first thing you need to do is wet your face. My advice is to use warm water, with warm water your hair will stand up and your skin follicles will open up. The nice thing about this is that you will get a really close shave and you will feel great afterwards.

Something else that I highly recommend is that you use warm shaving cream. If you think that warm water replaces warm shaving cream, then think again because you need to use them both to get the best shave. If you don’t have a shaving cream warmer then I suggest getting one because they are extremely quick at heating up the shaving cream and they are not that expensive. If you don’t have a shaving cream warmer, then simply putting the shaving cream under hot water for a few minutes will do the trick.

Now that you have your shaving cream ready, lather it on your face really well. Something I do all the time is limit the shaving cream that I use, I do this so that I don’t have to keep on buying new cans every month or so. Another thing that I do is make sure that I can see my face when I shave, if you have facial hair that you want to keep then you will understand where I am coming from on this one..

Shaving is really easy, you must shaving with the grain or else you could risk hurting yourself. When you shave against the grin you will get ingrown hairs and often times your skin will become irritated soon after shaving. Do yourself a huge favor and simply shave with the grain and never shave a spot that doesn’t have any warm shaving cream on it.

To Shave or Not To Shave

To Shave or Not To Shave

Article by Chris

That is the question. There are many reasons why one shaves, and there are many reasons one does not shave. Let?s explore the grooming of those men in the workforce.

Now, it all depends on what type of work we are talking about. Obviously, there are careers where you can have beards like ZZ Top if you want to, and it would be okay. Let?s talk a bit about the corporate world for the sake of this argument. Is a boss going to hire a guy who comes in for an interview and his face is riddled with severe shaving rash? Maybe; however, he may look a little un-kept. But what if that is how his face looks all the time after he shaves?

One of the typical looks associated with success in business is to be clean-shaven. Why is that? What is the difference between a man with a beard and a man who does not have a beard? Either look has no bearing on whether or not one has the mental capacity to excel in a business setting. There are many men who would desperately like to shave every day. Unfortunately when they do shave they get severe ingrown hairs. There is a good chance that many of these men do not reach the apex of their career potential because of a lack of confidence or opportunity due to shaving issues.

For the most part, it is quite common for men to shave their face in the morning at the start of the day. It?s very clean, put-together look that signifies one is well groomed and put together. In the eyes of society as a whole, this is typically one of the first indications signify a person?s social status.

However, there are plenty of people who do not look so neat and well-put-together, yet they are quite successful. Certain employers would prefer to urge someone to shave who is susceptible to shaving rash, as oppose to allowing him to grow a well-groomed beard to hide his problem? Gee that is a tough spot to be in. So I guess obvious skin problems look more professional than a little hair on the face. Sure.

I know a guy who even tried to get a job with one of the more popular courier companies, and he was told that he would have to shave his beard if he was hired. What if he had the best customer services skills and could drive a van like no other? You mean to tell me if he wouldn?t want to shave, he would not get the job? Well, that is exactly what happened; well not exactly, he just opted not to pursue the job any further for that reason.Overall, ingrown hairs and other shaving problems can cost a man his confidence and a job.
